Annual Plant Sale & Flea Market
This is an annual all-member event held in May. Members divide emerging perennials from their gardens to donate to the garden club. The club also purchases plants in bulk and all the plant material is sold at the Plant Sale. The date is always the Saturday before Mother’s Day and the location is the grounds of Laurel Arts. Members and friends of the garden club donate items for the flea market where we sell the “treasures” unearthed from our spring cleaning. Profits go toward purchasing flowering plants for our Uptown Beautification project later in the month.
July Picnic
Since the 1930s The Somerset Garden Club and The Johnstown Garden Club have taken turns hosting the July picnic luncheon. It is a great afternoon spent making and renewing friendships, trying new dishes, and enjoying a program related to different aspects of gardening. This year the picnic will be held at The Trinity Lutheran Church on Tayman Ave, on July 14.
Flower Show
Flower shows have always been a vital part of the garden club's history. We generally hold one every other year, but our show in July will make the third year in a row we've held one. Last year's show was held in Berlin at their community building, during the craft show and holiday home tour in November. This year's show will be titled "A Night at the Oscars." There will be 36 designs, horticulture specimens, and educational displays by the Somerset Historical Society and The Master Gardeners. We hope to see you at The Dressler Art Center on July 18 and 19.
Fall Luncheon & Amanda Dowie Dried Flower Contest
The fall luncheon is held in October, when we enjoy eating together at a local restaurant. This year we will be patronizing Crazy Alice's. Amanda Dowie was a long-time member, one who excelled at dried flower arrangements. She left an endowment to our club to be used as a prize for the best dried flower arrangement. We have some incredibly talented members whose creativity allows them to design quite inventive and lovely arrangements.
Wreath Sale
During the year we gather pinecones for the Christmas wreaths that we sell shortly after Thanksgiving as our Christmas fundraiser. After lunch at our November meeting we have a great time wiring cones in clusters of three resembling flowers and creating dozens of festive bows. Shortly before the sale we wire our creations onto purchased wreaths of fresh greens and sell them to presubscribed buyers at Laurel Arts.
Christmas Luncheon
Our Christmas luncheon has traditionally been a meal provided by all our members, but in the last few years we've had to cancel because of inclement weather. This December we will try going to a local restaurant, with every member paying their own way. David Blume will present a program on holiday decorating.
